Ayesha Farooq has become
Pakistan's first female fighter pilot after she qualified the ultimate tests
required for it. She'll fly Chinese-made F-7PG fighter jets.
- She's from Punjab province's city of Bahawalpur
- Five other female pilots will be ready to take tests for combat role (you will find total 25 Female Pilots in Pakistani air force). While people who qualify in these combat roles is going to be war ready, Non-fighter pilots fly slower aircraft and ferries troops and equipment.
- Her achievement becomes extraordinary when one considers the traditionally male-dominated military and a conservative society's attitude towards women in Pakistan
- With changing attitudes recently more and more women are joining Pakistan's defence forces and today about 4,000 women are serving in the armed forces. But they are largely performing desk jobs and medical work and therefore are banned from ground combat.
- Ladies have now become sky marshals (defending Pakistan's commercial liners against insurgent attacks) and serving within the elite anti-terrorist force.
- Pakistan now has 316 women in mid-air force compared to around 100 5 years ago.
